Match of the week! V2 style

My first pick of the all new(and slightly ripped off) MOTW series, isn't a classic but its a damn good match, its HBK vs Benjamin from raw/2005 and was part of the gold rush tournament.

But sadly its also a reminder of where Benjamin should be right now, and that's not messing around with the bums and N00bs over on ECW.

Good choice there bazz. This for me, is the match where Benjamin's push peaked. After this it was sadly all down hill, with WWE deciding to associate Shelton with the Mama Benjamin character, from which he has still never recovered. But this match shows just what Benjamin is capable of in the ring. Shawn Michaels does his share in there too of course, but looking back on it now, it is just a reminder of what could have been for Shelton.

I agree, this was a great match although I would have liked to have seen Shelton win and go onto win the Gold Rush tournament

I thought the Mama Benjemin character was another step in the right direction regarding his push at the time, when she got ill they ended the angle and for some reason his push as well.

I didn't really watch it much around the Mama B time, but it sounded really dumb, although it has to be better than jobbing to Kofi Kingston on ECW every week.

I get the feeling that they have given up on ever making him a top star, which is a shame.

Batista made a good point about Shelton in his autobiography (which a horrific thing to type)... off-screen, Shelton is really funny apparently, and does some amazing impressions of singers and other wrestlers. When he gets into the ring, he just seems to dry up. The Mama Benjamin character was their attempt at giving him another personality to play off against, but it failed mainly due to the fact she was a blatant stereotype, and never got over (think the black woman in the Tom & Jerry cartoons, and you're fairly close).

At this point, Shelton is there purely to help other wrestlers get over, and to have good matches with everyone he's up against. Which is a real shame, the guy is amazing at wrestling, he just doesn't have that X factor to get him over to even US title status at the moment.

while the only thing i big dave have done in my entire career that has any personality whatsoever is go "heeeeyaaaa" on this weeks smackdown
