-- Pro Wrestling Illustrated -- which is still alive -- has published its list of the top 500 wrestlers each year since 1991, in an annual special edition magazine called the PWI 500. Randy Orton tops the list this year. Orton is on the cover of the magazine and the headline reads: "Randy Orton #1 - "Who Else?" John Cena topped the list the past two years. You can see the cover at the official Pro Wrestling Illustrated website. The magazine is scheduled to hit newsstands on Tuesday, August 19, but it should be in mailboxes in a week or two.

the PWI top 500, and the PWI itself is a joke. Not a patch on the PS50 and Powerslam.

Don't know about that, Edge surely has to be up there, he was champion for longer than Orton and won more matches at PPV's i think

Just my opinion, but I found Orton's title run more entertaining than edges ever was, edge having to wrestle the same two people for the most part of it didn't help.

Oh don't get me wrong, im not saying theres no point posting this news, it's even a good pick for number one, arguable, but good. It's just that I hate PWI and the PWI 500, I know its not just rated on ability but the list just seems so arbitury each year. I mean have the PWI staff really seen 500 stars perform this year and managed to find out their merchandis sales, position on the cards, arena ticket sales and everyhting else that I supposedly taken into account?

The PWI is about as credible a source as the WWE magazine, as it's totally kayfabe. Orton seems a decent choice though, despite how poorly he was booked in the first half of his title reign.

Suppose I have got to agree with that, Ortons run was far more entertaining, I found myself wanting to see Orton lose to the likes of Michaels Jericho and even Hardy at one point while I was desperate for Edge to keep the strap because I didn't want Batista or Taker anywhere near it
Good point

How is it treated within the industry?
I have known about the PWI for years but was never sure if it was officially recognised by the 'insiders' of the business, It looks totally Kayfabe though, which I suppose isn't a bad thing, after all we have the soap awards every year, we cant have Steve McDonald losing out on winning the best bad guy because in reality he is really a nice guy now so I suppose Kayfabe is a good way to do certain awards in regards to a kayfabe environment

I was under the impression PWI go as far as to pretend they have interviewed WWE stars in-character when they actually haven't. they can get away with this apparently because the characters WWE stars portay are fictitious so I doubt insiders care for PWI at all really.
They should totally bring back the Slammys.

Is that the one Owen Hart won and carried it everywhere with him?
I always thought that was a kinda insider joke from Owen

PWI is so badly kayfabed, they have fake writers, like one guy will write under 5 different names, and their interviews and articles treat wrestling as being real.
And I second the call for a return of the Slammys

This is what its all about
Wrestlers now think and act like hollywood, back in those days they had a right good laugh, they knew many mocked them so they camped it up, and the characters where better as well
